Kanyakumari is the land’s end and at the confluence of the bay of bengal, indian ocean and the arabian sea. On full moon days, one could see the sunset and the moonrise at the same hour. The full moon day in the month of chithirai (April-may) is the best time, since on that day the sunset and moon-rise takeplace when the sun and moon are face to face in a straight line along the horizon. It is the tip of the indian peninsula and its antiquity goes to pre himalayan days.
Actually, it is the residual part of the lost lemuria which extended up to africa and australia. So, the rocks are geologically the oldest of their kind. it was ruled by the pandyas and later; parts of it were in kerala and after reorganisation of the states, all the Tamil speaking areas were seceded and the district was formed in 1956. Natural vegetation abounds on the western side and the eastern side is a fertile plain. It has 68 kms length of sandy seashore rich in atomic minerals. The sands of the beach are of different hues due to the mineral content. As it is surrounded on three sides by sea, it enjoys a temperate climate. Besides, it is a major pilgrim centre with a heavy floating population.
